See below some of our frequently asked questions on 2019 Life Pass rules and benefits.
I already have a Mt Ruapehu Snow Card. Can I reload a Life Pass on to this card?
No, Life Pass cards are different to our Season Pass cards. We will send out a new specially branded Life Pass card. There is no charge for your first Life Pass card, but a $5 fee will apply to any replacement cards if your card is lost, stolen or damaged.
How long is a Life Pass or Life+ Pass valid for?
Life Passes are valid for the life of the pass holder, and such time that RAL has licences to operate the ski areas.
The current Whakapapa licence is valid until 2045, with the right to earn a further 6 x 5-year extensions.
The current Turoa licence is valid until 2047, with the right to earn a further 6 x 5-year extensions.
What is the difference between a Life Pass and a Life+ Pass?
A Life+ Pass is the same as a Life Pass, but it can be transferred to another person within 10 years of the pass purchase date. The pass can only be transferred once. Some customers choose this option if they think they may not be skiing as much in 10 years’ time, or as a backup in case their circumstances otherwise change. Standard Life Passes are totally non-transferable.
There is no additional fee to process the transfer, and if you choose not to transfer your Life+ Pass within 10 years, you don’t need to do anything. The pass remains yours to keep for life!
Can I add insurance to a Life Pass, similar to the Season Pass Warranty?
No, Life Passes are non-refundable under any circumstances. Only Life+ Passes can be transferred to another person; this can be done once only and must be transferred within 10 years of the pass purchase.
Does a Life Pass allow access to the lifts in summer?
Yes, you will be able to ride the lifts all year round at Whakapapa when the Sky Waka gondola opens.
What other benefits are available to Life Pass Holders?
Season and Life Pass benefits are subject to change each year. In 2019, Life Pass holders can enjoy the following on-mountain benefits:
• 15% off food and beverage (excluding alcohol)
• 15% off full price retail purchases at Vertical Retail
• 15% off group lessons (excludes packages, private lessons and multi day programmes)
• 15% off daily rentals
• 15% off sledding passes
• 15% off platinum passes (sold out for 2019)
• Buddy Passes: 4 x 50% off full-price single day passes

• FREE access to First Tracks
Also included are some great off-mountain discounts at accommodation and activity providers in the Ruapehu and Taupo districts, plus other ski areas in New Zealand and overseas. A full list of the current benefits is available <<here>>.
Can I still get a cheap Season Pass for my children if I buy a Life Pass?
Yes, you will be eligible for any Child Season Pass deals where an Adult Season or Life Pass would usually be required.
Can I upgrade my Life Pass to an Ultimate Pass for 2019?
Yes! We are offering the Ultimate Pass with Cardrona Alpine Resort this year. You will be able to purchase the Ultimate Life Pass Upgrade for 2019 during the month of April, by logging in to your mtruapehu.com account and selecting this option from the ‘My Pass Upgrades’ menu. The price to upgrade will be $650 per Adult and $350 per Youth Life Pass holder.
Can I upgrade my Life Pass to a Platinum Pass for 2019?
Due to popular demand, 2019 Platinum passes have SOLD OUT. These will be available for the 2020 winter season from October 1st; numbers are strictly limited and sold on a first come, first served basis.
What happens if I buy a Life Pass, then RAL is sold to another company or goes into receivership?
If RAL was sold, Life Pass obligations would transfer with the business. If the business did go into receivership, Life Pass holders would be unsecured creditors.
RAL has been operating since 1953 and has always maintained conservative levels of debt. This, along with the organisational design, means it is highly unlikely that either of these scenarios would occur.
