At the request of the Department of Conservation (DOC), Mt Ruapehu operated under a car parking reservation system in 2020. The system was designed to manage congestion and capacity and was initially intended to run for 10 peak weekends only, but it became an essential tool under Covid 19 Alert Level 2 as we were only able to welcome 30-50% of our “normal” guest numbers- this translated to the number of car parks available and for the duration of Level 2 this was a really tough thing.
We believe in managing capacity to maximise guest enjoyment and to ensure responsible management of the special place that our ski areas occupy. But we also believe controls should be rationalised to truly focus on only the times of peak demand.
DOC have accepted our suggestion that Bookable Parking should run for only six weekends in 2021 and this will be from July 31st to September 5th*. There will be no charges associated with parking and we are underway with improving the technology and booking process.
In October, when we launched our Earlybird Season Pass campaign we announced that Life Pass holders would not need to book parking in 2021** and we are pleased to now update that this will also be extended to Anytime Season Pass holders**. Our website and updates closer to winter will cover more details on how this will work but for now we can tell you that the driver will need to hold a Life or Anytime Season Pass and that it will be important to update your details and collect your pass before visiting.
